Environmental Drilling Services: Built for Scrutiny

Environmental drilling services install the wells and collect the subsurface samples that monitoring and remediation projects are built on. Continental Drilling does that work with the accuracy, documentation, and discretion these projects demand. On an environmental site, the data has to be right and hold up when a regulator, an engineer, or a court asks how you got it. That standard shapes every foot of the borehole, and it is the reason environmental consultants across the Gulf South keep our crews on their sites.

Our environmental drilling work covers four core areas:

  1. Monitoring well installation
  2. Soil sampling and groundwater sampling
  3. Remediation drilling and system installation
  4. Well decommissioning

What is environmental drilling?

Environmental drilling is the practice of boring into soil and rock to monitor, sample, and clean up contamination in the ground. It centers on monitoring wells (wells drilled to track groundwater quality over time) and remediation (the process of removing, containing, or neutralizing contaminants in soil and groundwater). Unlike a water well or an oil well, the goal is not what comes out of the ground. The goal is an accurate, documented picture of what is already down there.

Continental Works on Specialized Types of Environmental Projects

Environmental drilling shows up wherever someone needs to know what is in the ground and prove it. That includes Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (subsurface investigations that confirm whether contamination is present before a property changes hands), underground storage tank sites, brownfield redevelopment (returning contaminated or formerly industrial land to productive use), industrial spill response, and long-term landfill monitoring.

The sites differ, but the demand is the same on all of them: accurate subsurface data, documented well enough to satisfy whoever reviews it. Continental crews work across that full range, matching the approach to what the site and the regulator require.

Different Drilling Methods

The right method depends on the geology, the depth, and how clean the samples have to be. Environmental work commonly calls for direct push technology (advancing a probe into the ground to collect soil and groundwater samples with minimal disturbance), hollow-stem auger drilling (a method that keeps the borehole open for sampling and well construction as it advances), and sonic drilling (a faster, high-resolution method that produces continuous, intact core).

Continental selects the method that best protects sample integrity and provides the consultant with the cleanest possible picture of the subsurface, rather than forcing every site through the same rig.

The Importance of Documentation

Environmental data rarely stays on the site. It goes to regulators, permitting agencies, insurers, and sometimes attorneys. Each will ask how someone took the sample and whether anything could have compromised it.

Continental maintains a clean chain of custody (a documented record showing exactly how each sample was handled from the field to the lab) and logs every boring with the detail a consultant needs to defend the results. When the paperwork is as disciplined as the drilling, the findings hold up. When it isn’t, the whole project is exposed.

Protecting Sample Integrity

The fastest way to ruin an environmental job is cross-contamination (the accidental transfer of contaminants between soil or water zones during drilling). We drill using methods matched to the site, decontaminate equipment between borings, and construct wells to prevent surface water and shallow zones from migrating down the borehole. Clean methods are not a courtesy on these jobs. They are the difference between data a consultant can stand behind and data that gets thrown out.

Additional Teams, Agencies, and Professionals on Environmental Projects

We work closely with environmental consultants, engineers, and regulatory teams, not around them. On most sites, we are the field arm of someone else’s plan, and our job is to execute it precisely and quietly so their conclusions hold. What we bring to that partnership:

  • Monitoring well installation built to state specifications
  • Soil sampling and groundwater sampling with documented chain of custody
  • Remediation drilling for injection, extraction, and treatment systems
  • Well decommissioning that seals abandoned borings against future contamination
  • Detailed field logs and reporting that stand up to regulatory review
  • Discretion on sensitive or high-visibility sites

Our Bottom Line

Environmental work is measured after the crew leaves, in a lab result, a compliance report, or a hearing. Continental drills so that every one of those moments goes the client’s way: accurate data, clean documentation, and no surprises. That is what more than seventy years of doing hard work the right way earns you: the confidence to invite scrutiny instead of bracing for it.
